Wednesday - January 5th After disembarking the Sojourn in Los Angeles we took a cab to LAX and a
Delta Airlines flight directly to Lihue. The Condo we rented in 2009 and 10 had been taken off the rental
market so we found another Ocean Front Condo at Poipu Makai. It is a two bedroom unit and very
comfortable. It is truly ocean front with no obstructions or road between us and the ocean. We enjoy
watching sea turtles and whales from our balcony.
Thursday - January 6th We didn't waste any time and stocked up on the stables we needed for the
next month at Walmart and Costco. We stopped by the Koloa Fish Market and picked up some Ahi Poke
for dinner which we enjoyed with rice and beans.
Friday - Onward Inasmuch as Kauai is a small island, and we had been here the past two
years, we really just enjoyed the warm weather and didn't feel any need to be in a rush. Eleanor has been
very good about exercise the past year, but I got lazy, so getting back into shape has been a priority for me.
Each morning we take a long walk before breakfast. One morning I stopped to watch a Hawaiian Monk Seal
haul out of the ocean. They are endangered but can be observed with some regularity on Kauai.
About once a week we drive north to the Kilauea Lighthouse Refuge where I enjoy photographing the
bird life. I met a nice volunteer there on our first visit in 2009 who is originally from Greenwich, CT and
works as a guide with Lindblad Expeditions during the summer months. She has been a great help to
pointing me to other spots on Kauai to photograph birds. We then continue on north to Hanalei where we
have lunch.
We also enjoy leisurely trips to Waimea Canyon, Wailua Falls and several other scenic places on the
Island.
Of course, no trip to Hawaii would be complete without at least one "shave ice" (not shaved!). Our
favorite here is Jo Jo's.
Our nicest surprise this year was finding a new restaurant named Josselin's, named after its owner chef.
If you are planning a trip to Kauai and want to rent a condo or house we highly recommend the Parrish
Collection who we have used these past three years.
Thursday - Feb 3rd It is hard to believe a month has gone by, Tomorrow we fly to the Big Island.
