2010 - KAUAI

Monday - Jan 4th                        With the recent "underwear bomber" scare, we weren't sure what to expect
at the Honolulu Airport, but everything went smoothly.  The TSA people were very courteous, and actually
apologized when they inspected the carry-on containing all my computer and photo equipment.

We are staying in the same Condo unit we rented last year, so we were used to the routine.  Tuesday and
Wednesday were rainy, but we really didn't mind and spent the time stocking the condo for the next month
and sitting in the spa pool between showers.  I even got an eye exam at Costco and ordered a new pair of
glasses.

Friday - Jan 8th                         We drove to the north end of the Island, stopping at the Kilauea Point
Wildlife Refuge along the way.  It was a beautiful, sunny day and the birds were not active.  We did see an
albatross or two in the air, and a few humpback whales, but it was not a good day for wildlife viewing.  After
lunch in Hanalei we drove back to our condo on the south shore.

Saturday - Jan 9th onward     Relaxing and reading.  Ate out on Friday and Saturday nights.    My favorite
Hawaiian "comfort food" is
Kalua Pig and Cabbage followed by a Hula Pie.

Tuesday - Jan 12th                    Spend a relaxing day driving to the end of the Waimea Canyon.  We stopped
at Jo Jo's Shave Ice in the town of Waimea.
Click here for more info on shave ice.  We had tropical rainbow
with mac nut ice cream.

Sunday - Jan 17th                      We returned to the Kilauea Point Wildlife Refuge in the morning.  There
were several
albatross and red-footed boobies flying, but I really didn't get any notable photos.  The sea
was very rough and the waves crashing against the shore were spectacular.

I was finally able to get a decent photo of the "
green flash" as the sun set.  We have been seeing the
phenomenon on clear evenings, but it is not the easiest thing to get a photo of as it only lasts for a second
or two.

Saturday - Jan 23rd                   H'mmm - slow week!  Not much to report.  Made it to the Beach Hut for a fish
sandwich at lunch one day, and to
Brenneke"s Beach Broiler on another.  Both restaurants offer a scenic
view of the ocean, nice breeze, and good food.  We enjoy the spa pool a couple of times a day, and its a
good way to meet other people staying at the resort.

Tuesday - Feb 2nd                     Really enjoyed the last 10 days,  Nice warm weather and met lots of nice
people around the pool and spa.  Had a really great dinner at the Tidepools Restaurant located in the Grand
Hyatt.  We took a couple of short scenic drives, but for the most part just enjoyed the view from our condo.

We could tell that things were less crowded here this year.  The higher end restaurants were busy, but
everything else was pretty quiet.

Tomorrow we move on to the Big Island.
